Why We Exist
EveryDoctor began in 2019, when a growing group of doctors became deeply concerned about their working conditions and the care their patients were receiving.
Across the NHS, services were deteriorating. Understaffing was worsening.
Delivering excellent care was becoming harder and harder. Political decisions were reshaping the health service, and not for the better.
At the same time, mounting workloads and relentless pressure were driving staff out of the NHS altogether.
We knew something had to change. So we decided to do something about it.
Building Something for the Long Term
Many of us already had experience in healthcare campaigning. We understood how demanding it can be to campaign while working in the NHS, and we also knew this couldn’t be a short-term fight.
The NHS had become a political football. That wasn’t likely to change any time soon.
So we made a deliberate decision to build something sustainable: a long-term, independent, non-profit campaigning organisation.
That organisation became EveryDoctor.
We began by bringing doctors together, shaping our strategy, and sharing vital stories about patient safety and staff wellbeing with the media.
And then, in early 2020, everything changed.
The Pandemic Changed Everything
Through our network of doctors, we began to hear what was happening on the ground in the earliest months of COVID-19. Staff were sharing frontline experiences, emerging research, and growing fear about what lay ahead.
We realised that this information couldn’t stay hidden.
So we acted fast.
We launched #ProtectNHSWorkers, a powerful national campaign demanding safe working conditions for NHS staff, many of whom were working without adequate PPE or protections.
Through rapidly built media connections, we brought huge volumes of staff testimony into the public domain. We began running weekly parliamentary briefings, giving politicians direct access to evidence they could not get anywhere else; from broken PPE supplies to the unfolding mental health crisis among healthcare workers.
We were also contacted by the Good Law Project. Together, we took the Conservative government to court and successfully proved the existence of the VIP PPE lane.
It was a defining moment for EveryDoctor.
From Doctors’ Campaign to National Movement
As our profile grew during the pandemic, more and more people reached out, not just doctors, but patients and members of the public who wanted to stand with NHS staff.
From the very beginning, we believed that staff and patients must stand up for each other if real change is going to happen.
So EveryDoctor evolved.
Today, we are a powerful community of thousands of NHS staff and patients, campaigning together for the future of our health service.
What We’ve Achieved Together
Since the pandemic, EveryDoctor has become a national campaigning force:
- We have delivered over 30 parliamentary briefings
- We have contributed to thousands of media stories
- We have led ground-breaking investigations into:
- Patient safety
- NHS privatisation
- Political donations and corporate influence
- Our work has now reached millions of people
And we believe this is only the beginning.
The Fight Ahead
The NHS is facing one of the greatest challenges in its history.
It has been under-funded and under-resourced for years. Staff have been treated appallingly. And successive governments have pushed privatisation and corporatisation, moves that don’t help patients, but do help shareholders.
EveryDoctor exists to challenge all of this.
We fight for:
- Proper support for every NHS worker
- Equal, safe, excellent care for every patient
- A publicly owned NHS that puts people before profit
We believe in the founding principles of the NHS and we are here to defend them.
